Tutor Training

Tutors can use the ARB with their learners when teaching reading. ARB materials can be used to determine the specific reading tasks to be taught, monitor progress in learning, select level-appropriate reading materials, and find helpful teaching strategies.

There are four ARB learning modules that can be used for tutor training to give tutors additional knowledge and resources for reading instruction. These modules were used in a pilot project to test the ARB training materials. All of the practitioners in the pilot recommended these materials for tutor training.

They can be delivered by a facilitator or used as a self-study module. Each module takes about 1.5-2 hours to work through so Literacy Coordinators can pick and choose which topics they would like to share with their tutors for training.

It is highly recommended that before using Module 3 or 4 that tutors receive instruction in
“Getting Familiar with the ARB” in Module #2.

The learning modules include training in:

Module #1

  • Introduction to the Purpose and
    Content of the ARB

Module #2

  • Getting Familiar with the ARB
  • Assessing Reading Skills

Module #3

  • Learning Plans
  • Teaching Strategies

Module #4

  • How to Benchmark Materials to the ARB
